Lauren Conrad has slammed a magazine

The reality TV star has accused Us Weekly of pulling together a number of interviews and placing her picture on the front cover with the headline, “Stabbed in the Back,” referring to her friend and co-star Audrina Patridge.
But Conrad is adamant she has not spoken to anyone at the publication.
She writes on her blog, “The article itself is a nice one but it follows headlines that, in no way, represent my words or feelings. I do not feel betrayed by Audrina or (Conrad’s ex) Brody (Jenner). I love them both and said nothing to contradict this.”
And a friend tells Page Six Conrad was not happy with the article because she is friends with people at the magazine: “She’s very good friends with these people. She goes out to dinner with them, and so does Audrina. So Lauren definitely wasn’t happy when she saw this cover.”

I’d give up fame tomorrow for a solid relationship.“Looking back now, I wonder if it really was love between Beau and me. I think it must have been deep infatuation based on lust.”

American Idol reject reveals how finalists pick songs

What could be juicier media fodder than a former exotic dancer vying to be the next American Idol?
David Hernandez, 24, had a glimpse of the downside of fame before he was voted off the talent show last week. Reports had revealed his having worked as a stripper at an Arizona bar that caters to mostly male clientele.
In an exclusive phone interview arranged by Star World, Hernandez made it clear he was not ashamed of anything he had done in the past. Americans, he said, were now smart enough to understand.
The singer was just as transparent about his eagerness to move on in the business. Several times during the interview, he managed to squeeze in his dream of landing a major record deal and releasing an album by next year. It seems Hernandez knows when to ride on to controversies, too.
With the first-come, first-served system, how do the contestants decide who gets to choose a song first? Is it true that you only have 25 songs to choose from? Yes. We normally just submit our top three [picks] and we choose from there. When two people choose the same song, we draw it from a hat.
How much control do the contestants have over the arrangement of the songs they perform? You’d be surprised how much the contestants are involved with the arrangement, but we have mentors who help us out.
Do you actually write the arrangement? We sit down with the piano player and the vocal arranger.
The result shows this year are an hour long. Does that make the contestants feel even more nervous? It’s nerve-wracking. It feels like our stomach is turning for a full hour, but on the flip-side it’s cool to see guest performers, so it’s like a mini free concert for us.
Was the paparazzi a problem for you and the other contestants? [At this point] I don’t think they even get to go out. Yesterday (the day before this interview), when I was going to get something, they had security with me.
When you auditioned for “Idol,” did you tell the producers about your past? Yes. If they weren’t comfortable with it, I wouldn’t have been on the show.
When you learned you would be in the Top 24, were you worried your past would affect anything? Absolutely not. The only thing I was worried about was my song selection.
Did all the news circulating on the Internet about your past become a distraction for you on the show? I blocked them all out by staying away from the TV and the Internet. It’s (focus on his past) actually been really good for me because I learned to have thick skin.
On the week that news about your past surfaced, you still managed to give a very calm performance. How did you do that? Adversary is my best friend. It inspires and makes me work harder. I don’t have anything to say to those who try to bring me down.
You looked shocked during your elimination. Did you not expect it?I was genuinely shocked. Based on all the things the judges have said about my vocals, I thought I would definitely be in the bottom three but I didn’t feel I deserved to go home.
Now that you’ve been voted off, what is your career plan? I will shop around for a record deal [because] I would like to have an album released within the next year. With other options like Broadway, I am definitely keeping my mind open to all those.
What will your first album sound like? It will be influenced by pop and R&B. I actually had an album that was never released and I had a single that was played on the East coast.
What have you learned from your nine-month experience with “Idol”? I have been given an amazing platform ... I learned a lot about self-confidence and how to be a great performer.

Iyou feel something pain in your knee, see your doctor

If you feel a dull, aching pain under or around the front of your kneecap each time doing leg exertions—walking, running or jumping—don’t just shrug it off, talk to a doctor.
For most orthopedic surgeons, the most frustrating thing is to meet patients with an already advanced stage of arthritis.
“In a lot of cases we meet patients whose only option is to have their knee joints replaced. If one sees a doctor much earlier, the condition can still be managed through a combination of medication, exercise, rest, weight-management and nutrition. Surgery is reserved for the most severe cases. I made this article because I am experiencing pain in my knee i want to let others know that small pain can lead to severe cases. so, in order to minimize the damage consult immediately your doctor. I always buy medicines for my joints pain. sometimes it works but just for a couple of days and it comes back again. so, I immediately consult my doctor regarding this matter and he gave me medicines that is for my my pain and it really works he prescribe me mefenamic acids and cataflams and some arthritis medications.

Guard your Kids Health

Two things i continue to be grateful for are the gifts of family and good health.
As parents, our greatest nightmare always comes in the form of children and loved ones who fall ill. To get our 2008 off to a healthy and bright start, here are some of the top children’s health concerns we need to watch out for this year.
Thanks to pediatric cardiologist Dr. Edgardo Ortiz, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Philippine General Hospital, our family pediatrician Dr. Joseph Regalado and Dr. Cynthia Cuayo-Juico, chair of the department of pediatrics at Manila Doctor’s Hospital and the Philippine Pediatrics Society head of the school health program, for most of the information provided here.
Substance abuse in the form of smoking and alcohol. Dr. Juico notes that there has been a marked increase in the cases of smoking and alcohol abuse among adolescents and teeners over the past year.
Stress encountered in school and family life and role-modeling, she says, are determinants of whether a child will succumb to this form of abuse. In the United States, a 1992 study conducted by Oakley, Biannen and Dodd found a positive correlation between the levels of alcohol use and abuse and the amount of daily stress and conflict within the family.
Juico attributes the rise to busier parents and the rise in OFW households where one or two parents are missing as reasons why more children and teens have turned to substance abuse. With regard to alcohol abuse, the child often turns to the parent as a role model.
“The manner by which alcohol is used within the home setting sends the child or teener very strong signals,” says Juico, who suggests that parents arm themselves with the right information so that they can educate their children about the dangers of substance abuse. “As a parent, it is important to really take time out and know your child,” she says.
Find ways to boost their self-esteem so that they have the courage to stand up against negative peer influences. More importantly, re-evaluate your family’s views towards alcohol so that you do not send your child or teener the wrong signals.
Obesity and nutritional concerns. Obesity has long been known to have links to medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma and cancer. The psychological implications on the obese child such as stereotyping and bullying are very real yet difficult to measure. Both Drs. Ortiz and Juico say that the availability of sugar-heavy fruit juices, softdrinks, sugary food such as calorie-laden doughnuts and salty chips are to blame for the rise in obesity among children.
In addition, owing to the rise of computer games and lifestyle choices, more and more children are becoming less active compared to a decade ago. A 2003 study by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute classified one percent of young children (1-10 years old) and three percent of adolescents (11-17 years old) as overweight (5th NNS, FNRI-DOST).
Among private school children specifically, there was an even higher prevalence of obesity that ranged from 25 to 50 percent. The major reasons stated for the development of obesity in both studies were sedentary lifestyle and intake of high-calorie, high-fat food.
Drs. Ortiz and Juico advise that parents help and role-model for their kids when it comes to healthy food choices. Ortiz says that parents should encourage more physical activity by “[Cutting] down on television and hours on the computer.”
Ortiz has had cases of very young but hypertensive children as a result of poor diet and a lack of physical activity. Exercising on a regular basis and cutting down on couch potato activities will not only create healthier families, but will also generate savings in food, electric bills and potential medical expenses.
Sexual health and teen pregnancies. Sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancies are again on the rise. Every year, the average age of sexual debut among our youth is decreasing. Sex education needs to be done in the light of values education. The best source for information is still one’s own parents.
However, many parents remain queasy about discussing sexual health issues. If you aren’t too comfortable about discussing the issues, take your child to a reputable clinic or request your pediatrician to initiate a discussion. Not talking about the dangers of sexual promiscuity doesn’t guarantee that it won’t happen.
A teener who is more aware of the dangers that sexual promiscuity brings will be more informed and armed against the harm that could possibly come to him or her.
Respiratory tract infections. Tuberculosis continues to be prevalent. Dr. Juico says that the practice of covering one’s mouth when one coughs cannot be overemphasized, as is the importance of hand washing. Elevators, escalators, doorknobs and many other objects are carriers of viruses and bacteria.
She says that parents need to have a hygiene kit on hand at all times. “It’s good practice to keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer in one’s bag or pockets. Unless necessary, keep young children away from malls and crowded places.”
In general, maintain good hygiene and constantly drill on your kids the importance of keeping clean.
Dengue. Drs. Regalado, Ortiz and Juico confirm that hospital room occupancy broke records over the recent holidays. Historically, there are hardly any patients during Christmas or New Year, but at the PGH, Cardinal Santos Medical Center and Manila Doctor’s Hospital last December, pediatric floors were almost booked solid.
Regalado and Ortiz say that dengue is now a year-round scourge. It chooses no age, social strata or sex. Prevention is still the best way to avoid it. Clean your homes and your surroundings, advocate for cleanliness in your community and in your child’s school, stamp out mosquito breeding grounds and be vigilant about using mosquito repellant, be it organic or the commercially available ones.
If you have the slightest suspicion that your child is suffering from dengue fever, bring him or her to the nearest hospital and closely monitor the fever. It is always best to be safe than sorry

Law Makers, Law Breakers

The Philippine National Police warned policemen on Saturday to wear their helmets when riding motorcycles and scooters around Metro Manila and other urban areas.
PNP Director General Avelino Razon told reporters that policemen caught riding without helmets would be immediately arrested by their fellow policemen.
“When policemen ride motorcycles, they should also wear helmets. Whoever is spotted without a helmet will be apprehended,” said Razon, himself a motorcycle rider.
He added that the PNP was enforcing a “no helmet, no travel” policy for private motorcycle riders on the city’s roads.
“The police are not exempted from that policy. Those who violate the policy are hard-headed, they should be arrested,” the PNP chief said.
Motorcycle rider groups and motorists have been complaining of policemen who insist on not wearing helmets when riding motorcycles and scooters despite the fact that private riders are flagged down by police for not wearing helmets.

Coconut house a perfect for family gathering

Finally, a home for coconut producers/traders and coco lovers. The Coconut House is found in Xavierville Village along Esteban Abada Street. Organized by COVCOP (Cooperative of Philippine Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and Allied Products Manufacturers and Traders), the showroom/shop and resto serves every imaginable coconut product—cosmetics, fashion accessories and food items with VCO as the star of the store. Good news for diabetics. If white sugar rates 100 percent on the glycemic index, coco sugar is only 35 percent. Thus, it is safe for those with diabetes.
At the resto can be found an ice cream bar whose main attractions are the popular smoother than silk coconut ice cream in ube, corn and regular flavors as well as the skimmed coco milk whose light nutty flavor is undeniably refreshing. It is the best non-daily milk in the world. You may want to try pancit buko and buko-okoy, I love their food so much and I remeber during the days when we visited this place I really love the place because its perfect for family gathering mostly if you have a diabetic member of the family like my father.

Badian Resort in Cebu

IN Badian Island Resort and Spa, hospitality is a way of life.
This is not a cliche. Take, for example, the way a guest is welcomed at the resort. At the docking station, the whole Badian crew breaks into their signature welcome song once you arrive. Someone puts a garland of flowers around your neck, while another accompanies you to the reception with an umbrella to shade you from the heat of the sun.
At the reception, another staff hands you a refreshing face towel soaked in very cold water, so you can wipe away the day's sweat, dirt and stress.
Badian's servers and waiters are just as courteous and helpful as the other staff members. At the resort's Panorama restaurant, they keep their distance but are very attentive. They know when to come over in case you need or want anything, be it another round of drinks, a plate that needs to be replaced or a new set of utensils.
The food served at Panorama restaurant is an eclectic, tasty mix. For their welcome lunch, they were serving Japanese food such as gyoza, seaweed soup with squid balls, tender strips of beef with teriyaki sauce and pots of hot green tea. I love Badian resort It is just a two hours away from my house in cebu. I love to go back and experience again the beauty of nature and their satisfying services.

The winning formula

Beloved children’s book author-artist Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, created original and appealingly weird characters throughout his career.
Just as important, he imbued his imaginative stories with human familiarity. This is especially noticeable in the new animated feature, “Horton Hears a Who.”
The timeless tale is naturally populated by his creations, as well as smart and ponderous animals. The movie is cute and visually kinetic, so kids could dig it as much as Seuss’ illustrated books. Plus, it’s got enough substance and philosophical ideas that could tug at grown-up hearts, maybe even inspire deep thought.
That’s a rare and winning combination. It’s a smart yet heartwarming film, vividly rendered by Blue Sky Studios, who previously did the hit cartoon films “Ice Age” and its sequel. Moreover, “Horton” has a uniquely playful and dreamlike atmosphere, so it doesn’t bore.
Slow start
It starts a little slow but the pace picks up quickly and one is soon in the orbit of the earnest elephant, Horton (voiced expressively by Jim Carrey). Horton discovers a tiny speck that is actually the microscopic world of the Whos. Civilized and cultured, these people are unaware of his existence, but they occasionally feel his hovering, monumental presence.
Horton directly contacts one of them—the Mayor (Steve Carell)—a dedicated but oft-ridiculed guy who connects sudden environmental and atmospheric changes to various goings-on in the elephant’s humongous home environment. The cross-dimensional communication isn’t always smooth or obvious to others, which gets both of them in trouble in their respective worlds.
The stern and self-important Kangaroo (Carol Burnett) thinks Horton is insane and is becoming a bad influence on the young animals of their forest society. The Mayor is similarly mocked and chastised for speaking of the existence of something that he can’t prove.
Unusual premise
Such unusual premise ultimately treats the viewer to existential themes, as well as individuality-versus-mob consensus debates, and even situations portraying generational parent-child rifts. There are fun physical conflicts in “Horton,” but the more lingering ones take place in the scenes depicting allegories for ideological battles and authority-questioning in our reality. It’s good it’s presented in a way that’s easily comprehensible by the younger audience.
It’s not difficult to appreciate the maturity and relevance of Seuss’ story. “Horton Hears a Who” is a rarity, yes; it’s as enjoyable as the quirky live-action translation of the Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (which starred Carrey), but “Horton” is more layered, story-wise. It’s slightly absurd take on cosmology is entertaining, but it can also be enjoyed as a better-than-usual animated feature with exciting, kid-friendly moments.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's offers Amnesty Program

Only 300 so far have availed of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's offer of amnesty to erring public utility drivers, with only a few days left to the amnesty program.
MMDA Traffic Operations Center Director Angelito Vergel de Dios said on Sunday he was a bit surprised at the low turnout, but added that he expected the figure to go up by the end of the month.
"We expected at least 1,000 drivers with outstanding traffic fines but we have a week to go. There's still time for the other drivers to apply for amnesty until March 28," he said in a phone interview.
Earlier this month, the MMDA announced that it would be granting amnesty to drivers of passenger jeepneys, buses and taxis with unpaid traffic fines dating back to 1995 until Feb. 13 this year.
Those who want to avail of the offer should go to the MMDA office in Guadalupe, Makati and apply for amnesty before the close of office hours on March 28.
Drivers of provincial buses, however, are not covered by the scheme.
The amnesty also does not not apply to administrative offenses like driving without a license, operating "colorum" vehicles or those without a franchise, and violations of the truck ban.
It only covers moving violations such as disregarding traffic signs, illegal counterflow and reckless driving, according to the MMDA.
Vergel de Dios explained that the MMDA came up with the idea of offering amnesty after public transport operators asked the agency for help in cleaning up the records of their drivers.
"The operators claimed that their drivers are not that well informed about traffic rules so this is the first time we are offering this kind of amnesty," he said.
To qualify, a public utility driver should be endorsed by his operator to the MMDA. He should likewise pay the amount equivalent to the lowest fine imposed on him but without the additional penalty for late payments.
The driver would also be required to undergo a seminar on traffic rules and policies, Vergel de Dios added.
MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando earlier said that the amnesty should not be a reason for drivers to take traffic rules for granted.
Habitual traffic violators would face the risk of having their driver's license suspended, he warned.

Barera bets for Pacman

It was an accidental meeting between old foes.
But when they bumped into each other at the lobby of The Hotel at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino here, there were no feelings of hatred and animosity.
Instead, the meeting had an air of mutual respect. It was hard to say who was the victor between the two former protagonists.
They greeted each other, posed together and talked in whispers as if they were intimate friends. Hardly the fighters who want to rip each other’s head off in their showdowns in 2003 and last October.
Both times, Manny Pacquiao won over Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera, the last victory virtually sending Barrera into retirement.
Barrera came to this entertainment haven to watch Pacquiao’s rematch with fellow Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, who also beat him in March 2007.
Asked for his prediction on Pacquiao-Marquez II, Barrera told Manila-based sportswriters that being a Mexican he’s rooting for Marquez.
“I am Mexican, so I’ll go for Marquez,” said Barrera, who looked a little chubby in an all-black outfit.
In an earlier talk with a Filipino acquaintance, however, Barrera bared he’s putting his money on Manny.
“This [Pacquiao-Marquez] is going to be a big fight, big rematch,” said Barrera. “It will be more explosive and I expect the fight going the distance.”
According to Barrera, negotiations are still on for him to make a comeback under Golden Boy Promotions early this year.
There is also an offer for him to do a commercial with San Miguel Corp., which is being endorsed by Pacquiao.

Foreign aid for infra investors sought

MANILA, Philippines--Foreign lending institutions, including the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, will be asked to provide assistance to private sector companies that may want to invest in infrastructure projects of the national government.
Finance Secretary Margarito Teves said the proposal to the funding agencies will be formally raised in this year's Philippine Development Forum (PDF) to be held from March 27 to 29.
PDF is an event where government officials and representatives from foreign funding agencies meet to discuss projects that may be financed by official development assistance (ODA).
"The government wants private sector to be more involved in public infrastructure projects," Teves told reporters.
Economic managers earlier said the government wants private sector to be involved in more build-operate-transfer projects and other public infrastructure.
This way, the government may get to focus on vital projects while it addresses budgetary constraints.
Teves said private sector firms would be encouraged to invest in public projects if they could secure the loans.
Foreign funding agencies may help government undertake vital projects if they choose to lend to the private sector.
Teves said foreign funding agencies may also help in the form of providing guarantees to loans secured by private firms investing in government projects.
The government earlier identified some projects that the private sector may invest in: the Panguil Bay Bridge, the LRT Line 1 North Extension Project, the Tarlac-La Union Toll Expressway Phase I, the MWSS Bulk Water Supply Project, the Wawa River Project, the operations and maintenance of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway Project, and the privatization of the Ambuklao-Binga Hydroelectric Power Plants.

Anger is only one letter short of danger. If someone betrays you once, it is his fault; If he betrays you twice, it is your fault. Cebu Apartment construction

My parents have a property in Cebu City. It is an 88 square meter property that is located at the heart of the city. Since my father is not capable anymore in doing the maintenance of the said apartment due to his health condition, I was the one who manages and signs contracts in behalf of him. The last time I was there, I made a concrete wall that divides the neighboring property. It was so fun fixing and managing it since I worked before in a construction firm that builds high end condominiums in Makati and Ortigas center in Manila. I was with the Megaworld Properties and Holding Incorporated before and I worked their as a property consultant. I am so glad that I can exercise my ideas in the feild of constructions again. The performance and management of that apartment activity in Cebu is considered to be a very systematic one.
